Choosing a Retaining Wall Material: Block, Stone, Boulder, Timber, or Concrete

Choosing a Retaining Wall Material: Block, Stone, Boulder, Timber, or Concrete

One of the first decisions in any retaining wall project is the material. Each has its strengths. Here's an honest comparison for the Portland area.

Segmental Block (SRW)

The most popular option, and for good reason. Interlocking concrete block is strong, works with geogrid for tall walls, drains well, and comes in many styles and colors. It's the best all-around choice for most walls.

Natural Stone

Timeless and organic — every stone is unique. Dry-stacked or mortared stone walls look high-end and last a lifetime, making them ideal where appearance matters most. They cost more in labor for the craftsmanship involved.

Boulder & Rock

Big natural boulders hold larger grade changes with a rugged, natural look that suits Northwest landscapes. Great for erosion control and softer, organic designs.

Timber

Budget-friendly and warm-looking, pressure-treated timber suits lower garden walls and terraces. It has a shorter lifespan than stone or block and isn't the right call for tall structural walls.

Poured Concrete

The strongest option — reinforced, monolithic, and ideal for tall walls or surcharge loads like a driveway above. It can be finished smooth, board-formed, or veneered with stone.

The Verdict

For most Portland-area walls, segmental block delivers the best mix of strength, drainage, style, and value — but the right answer depends on your slope, height, and taste. Contact Oregon Retaining Walls and we'll recommend the best fit on a free consultation.
