Water Is the Number One Enemy

Behind every retaining wall, water builds up in the soil. Without a way to escape, it creates hydrostatic pressure that pushes relentlessly against the back of the wall. In rainy Oregon, that pressure is constant through the wet season. We defeat it with clean gravel backfill and a perforated drain pipe at the base of every wall, so water moves through and out instead of pushing the wall over.

A Poor Base

A wall is only as stable as what it sits on. Set a wall on thin, un-compacted, or poorly drained fill and our heavy clay soils will heave and settle it. We excavate to the right depth, compact an engineered gravel base, and set a level leveling pad before the first course goes down.

Missing Soil Reinforcement

Taller walls need more than a strong face — they need the soil behind them reinforced. Geogrid, a structural mesh buried in the backfill at engineered intervals, ties the wall and the soil mass together so they act as one. Skipping it is a common reason tall walls lean out over time.

No Batter or Setback

A good wall leans slightly back into the slope it holds (called batter). A dead-vertical or forward-leaning wall is fighting gravity from day one. We build the correct setback for the material and height.
